Is there anyone who hasn’t read this book or seen the movie?
It’s amazing and very interesting to reread books that I’ve read years before. I usually find that I dislike the book, or become very ambivalent about it. I remember really loving The Time Travelers Wife when it first came out, and I watched the movie as soon as it was released. The love story was touching and romantic, and I easily got sucked into the characters lives.
The book is beautifully written. The scenes flow smoothly from one point to another, and despite the strange circumstances, you never have trouble believing that this could really happen. If you had asked me ten years ago, I would have listed this book as one of my favorites.
Now, rereading it more than ten years after my first read through, at a totally different point in my life, I still like it but I find a lot of things in the book very disturbing. The need for Henry and Clare to conceive their own child, to the point of suffering through seven miscarriages, seems excessive. The way Henry sleeps with himself in such a cavalier fashion (I actually don’t remember this part at all from my original read through) and how he has no problem popping back in time and hanging out with his wife as child. And Gomez! That’s whole huge barrel of strangeness. He unashamedly continues to pursue Clare, despite the fact that she is his wife’s best friend and his best friend’s wife. That’s a whole lot of lines crossed that you do not cross, Gomez. You missed a few days of friend school and should brush up on what is not okay to do. And on top of his behavior, his wife (and Clare’s best friend!) Clarisse seems to know all about all of this and just accepts it as her lot in life. What is that??
Maybe I shouldn’t reread old favorites. It doesn’t always work out well for me.
